August 2017 Wrap Up

I participated in both the Make Me Read It Readathon and ARC August which definitely pushed me to read more than normal. Even with a bit of traveling, I managed to read 13 books in August.  I also made it through half of another.

Here is what I read.

The Hollow Girl by Hilary Monahan  4  1/2 stars  (arc)

Geekerella by Ashley Poston  5 stars

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera  5 stars

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller  4 stars (closer to  4 1/2)  (arc)

I participated in this readathon hosted by Tea and Titles and The Innocent Smiley.  My goal was to read the top three books voted on in my poll and I’m happy to say that I finished all three (and another ARC I needed to squeeze in for review).

The book with the most votes was Geekerella by Ashley Poston. I’m so happy this book won because it instantly became a new favorite.  I loved this book.  It was a fun read that I flew through.  I gave this book 5 stars.

Anything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

The second book I read was History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera.  I reviewed this book here.  Another 5 star rated book and another new favorite.  This book made me cry a lot.  It’s a super emotional read.

When Griffin’s first love and ex-boyfriend, Theo, dies in a drowning accident, his universe implodes. Even though Theo had moved to California for college and started seeing Jackson, Griffin never doubted Theo would come back to him when the time was right. But now, the future he’s been imagining for himself has gone far off course.

To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin’s downward spiral continues. He’s losing himself in his obsessive compulsions and destructive choices, and the secrets he’s been keeping are tearing him apart.

If Griffin is ever to rebuild his future, he must first confront his history, every last heartbreaking piece in the puzzle of his life.

The final book I read for the readathon was We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.  This was a good book, but not my favorite.  I gave it 3 1/2 stars (rounded it up for goodreads).  I liked the story and it was interesting, but the writing style wasn’t my favorite.  I did enjoy trying to figure out what happened though.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.

And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

I’m pretty happy with my first readathon.  It definitely pushed me to read more than I normally do in a week.  Thank you to all of you who voted to choose these books for me.

July Wrap Up

I read 9 books in July and ended up enjoying all of them.  I didn’t keep track of all the books I purchased, so I’ll try to do a book haul for August at the end of the month.

I also just started this blog a couple weeks ago.  Thank you to all who have started following it already.  I didn’t expect to have so many followers for a couple months.

Now to what I read.

I also got to go to one book signing in July.  It was at Anderson’s in Naperville, IL for Angie Thomas and Becky Albertalli.  You can see pictures here.

I don’t really make a TBR for a month.  I usually prefer to choose my books based on my mood.  But I will be reading some ARCs in August and the books that are chosen by you for the Make Me Read It Readathon next week.
