“Cheeseburgers!” I shout at the top of my lungs.

Jessie pulls me through the club, shoving people out of the way.  “Move people!  We’re getting cheeseburgers!”

“CHEESEBURGERS!”  I shout again, but few hear me over the thumping of music and drumming of feet against the dance floor.

I’m a month away from starting my junior year of high school, and I just found out that my father only has four months to live.

I don’t really hear all of what mom and dad are saying.  Just the important words like “cancer” and “out of remission” and “stage four”.

I realized that I haven’t done one of these in about a year.  I have no idea why, so I thought I would start doing them again.  Not every week, but every so often.

“You’re still alive in alternate universes, Theo, but I live in the real world, where this morning you’re having an open-casket funeral.  I know you’re out there, listening.  And you should know I’m really pissed because you swore you would never die and yet here we are.  It hurts even more because this isn’t the first promise you’ve broken.”

The Nazi officers are dressed in black.  They look at death with the indifference of a gravedigger.  In Auschwitz, human life has so little value that no one is shot anymore; a bullet is more valuable than a human being.  In Auschwitz, there are communal chambers where they administer Zyklon gas.  It’s cost effective, killing hundreds of people with just one tank.  Death has become an industry that is profitable only if it’s done wholesale.

“It’s too damn cold of a day to be out on a hunt.

I shiver, tug my scarf up higher over my mouth, and wipe a few snowflakes from my lashes.  Then I slam my boot down on my electric skateboard.  The board is old and used, like everything else I own, its blue paint almost entirely scraped off to reveal cheap plastic underneath-but it’s not dead yet, and when I push my heel down harder, it finally responds, jerking me forward as I squeeze between two rows of cars.  My bright, rainbow-dyed hair whips across my face.”

“On very still nights sometimes we can hear them chanting, calling for us to die.  We can see them , too, or at least make out the halo of light cast up from the shores of Barrel Key, where they must be gathered, staring back across the black expanse of water toward the fence and the angular white face of Haven Institute.  From that distance it must look like a long green jaw set with miniature teeth.”

“Recorder Empra McCarthy sat in the bleachers of the Amphitheatrum Flavium, her pregnant belly round as a globe under her indigo stola.  The Colosseum-not that it was called that, not yet-was a frenzy of life around her.  Nearly fifty thousand souls had come to watch the day’s bloodbath, filling the seats with earth-toned togas, popping salted peas and chunks of bread into their mouths, screaming last-minute bets adn Latin slang as the gladiators marched through the Porta Sanavivaria into the arena below.”

“It’s not like I haven’t seen a topless girl before.  I mean, I am one.  Not topless.  Not now anyway.  But I am a girl.

Seeing a topless girl standing on the neighbor’s balcony at six a.m., yelling and tossing clothes from the second floor, is definitely not the norm around here.”
