Thank you Senator Sanders

0830172026a

I don’t expect to get political on my blog since I respect that everyone has different views. But I was able to go see Bernie Sanders last night in Aurora, IL.  This was a book tour event hosted by Anderson’s Bookshop.  This is exactly what I needed right now.

Senator Sanders is such an inspiration and he motivates me to do more.  He spent over an hour talking last night.  The beginning was spent mentioning the book, but then he just took off from there. He spoke to use about Texas right away.

Some of the topics he covered were healthcare, voter suppression, the future with our children, climate change, racism and hate, how truly rich the richest people in the world are, immigration, personal stories from people he met, and so much more.  He was passionate and funny.

If you are somewhat progressive, please check out this new book. It’s YA and written more for a younger generation to inspire and motivate them.

A handful of the books were signed (not sure how many total) and I was lucky enough to receive one.  Guests were also able to buy shirts, hats, and buttons.  I did buy a shirt, but it went right into the hamper last night when I got home.

Overall, it was a great night.  This was my first time going to any type of political tour and I will definitely be going to more.

Final #ARCAugust Update

I’m pretty happy with how many ARCs I managed to finish in August.  Especially since I also did the Make Me Read It Readathon and none of those were ARCs.  I managed to finish 9 books and started a 10th.

Here is what I managed to read.

The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan    I gave this book 4  1/2 stars. I loved the blood magic and the Romani culture.

The Mask of Shadows by Linsy Miller   I gave this book 4 stars.  I loved the action and gender fluid character, but was confused a bit by all the people, times, and setting.  The second half of the book was easily 5 stars though.

The Third Kiss by Kat Colmer  I also gave this book 4 stars.  I loved the curse and demons.

Waiting on Wednesday 8/30/17

New WoW

Waiting on Wednesday was created by breaking the spine to show off an upcoming release you are looking forward to.

This week I’m picking Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh.

29906017

Summary from Goodreads:

An LGBT fantasy series that follows a talented necromancer who must face down a deadly nemesis who has learned how to turn her magic into a weapon.

Odessa is one of Karthia’s master necromancers, catering to the kingdom’s ruling Dead. Whenever a noble dies, it’s Odessa’s job to raise them by retrieving their souls from a dreamy and dangerous shadow world called the Deadlands. But there is a cost to being raised–the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.

A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa’s necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead–and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer’s magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

A lavish fantasy with a surprising and breathtaking LGBT romance at its core, Reign of the Fallen is a gutsy, unpredictable read that will grab readers by the throat and never let go….

Review of Boomerang Boyfriend by Chris Cannon (digital arc)

36054598

Summary from Goodreads:

Working with her best friend’s brother at Betty’s Burgers, free-spirited Delia starts to see Jack in a new light. Not only has Jack-the-Jerk turned into a hottie, he’s even acting like a nice guy, who rescues dogs and knows how she likes her coffee. But if Jack is into her, then why is he keeping her a secret? Of course, if her best friend doesn’t approve, Delia could lose the only family she’s ever known.
Seeing Delia in her retro waitress uniform throws Jack’s world out of whack. She’s always been just another pain in the butt little sister…not a datable female. But she’s rockin’ the Pie Princess tiara, and even her hot-pink striped hair is sexy. What’s that about? He needs to get his head on straight, because artsy, funky Delia and her nonconformist ways don’t fit in his safe and ordered world.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains kisses that make the world fall away and snarky humor that may cause you to LOL in public places.

My thoughts:

Most books from Entangled Teen (Crush) are cute reads and this was no exception. They’re fun and easy to read.  A perfect choice for me to read between fantasies or more serious books.

Delia is a bit annoying at times, but I love that she’s cool with standing out.  She has pink streaks in her hair and does weird things with make-up.  She’s artsy and isn’t really afraid to be herself.  I loved that about her.  Her family life isn’t great, but she makes the best out of it.

Jack is kind of an ass.  But he did lose his dad and grandpa in an accident and only has girls left in his family.  He seemed a bit afraid to live life at times.  But he’s a dog lover and that made him much better to me.  He’s also close to his friend, Trevor, and that made him more likable.

I actually liked the other characters and would have loved to read more about them. Aiden could be a pain and was a bit boring, but I liked him more once we knew his secret.

I was kind of pleasantly surprised to find that this book took place in Illinois.  Not only that, but Canton, IL.  My daughter moved to Pekin last year and I’m pretty sure her boyfriend’s mom lives in Canton.  I’ve never been there, but it was cool to have that connection when reading.

I liked Jack and Delia together, but not as much as I hoped.  I do think they bring out good things in each other and I really liked the ending.  I especially loved the dog stories throughout the book.

Overall, this was a 3 1/2+ star book for me (rounded it up to 4 stars).  I received a copy of this book from Entangled Teen through Netgalley for review.

Boomerang Boyfriend is set to be released September 11, 2017.

Summary from Goodreads:

Before

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

After

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.

One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

This book has some mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it.

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little LiarsOne of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.
Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.”

Norse Mythology Tag

I was tagged by Anatomy of a Book Thief for this tag.  Hopefully I can think of an answer for each one.  There are a lot!

  • Thank the person(s) who tagged you…show the community some love!

  • Don’t forget to tag others to keep the tag going!

ODIN – FAVOURITE STAND ALONE

Odin is the All-Father, the leader of the Norse Gods. He is the god of wisdom, poetry, battle, death, wine, and war, among other things.

395040

Not YA, but my favorite book is The Bell Jar.

THOR – A BOOK THAT HITS YOU RIGHT IN THE FEELS

Thor is the god of thunder, weather, warriors, strength, and storms, so his might packs a punch. He is married to the beautiful Lady Sif.

25014114

I’ve cried twice reading this year and both times were books by Adam Silvera.

LOKI – BIGGEST PLOT TWIST OR CHARACTER BETRAYAL

Loki is the god of mischief, thieves and thrives on chaos

29236298

I can’t say who this is about, but there was a character in this book who wasn’t who they said they were.

FRIGG – OTP

Frigg is Odin’s wife, the goddess of love, marriage, fertility and fate.

32075662 (1)

I adored Kate and August in This Savage Song and Our Dark Duet.

HEIMDALL – FAVOURITE SECOND BOOK IN A SERIES

Heimdall is the god of loyalty, faithfulness and he is who protects the bi-frost, the bridge that connects all nine worlds.

15755296

I’m not sure if it’s my favorite second book, but it was one I gave 5 stars.  There are still so many popular YA series that I haven’t read yet.

BALDUR – FAVOURITE MALE CHARACTER

Baldur is the beloved son of Odin and Frigg, twin brother of Hodor.

8709527

Another one that was tough for me.  But I really love Adrian Ivashkov.

SIF – MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK COVER

Lady Sif is known for her beautiful golden tresses, although she is also the goddess of the harvest and is married to Thor.

31931941

Not sure it’s the most beautiful cover, but I love this one.  Maybe not my favorite, but definitely a stand out for me.

FREY – BOOK/SERIES THAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU HAPPY

Frey is the lord of weather, god of light, summer, master of agriculture, fertility, and brother of Freya.

30264

Not sure that it makes me happy, but I do laugh a lot in this series. It’s pretty serious, but the humor is great, too.

FRAYA – FAVOURITE BOOK SETTING

Freya is the goddess of love and beauty, fertility, war, wealth and growth, and sister of Frey.

21523103

Hard to pick anything other than Hogwarts.  But there are quite a few cool book settings I love.

ULLER – CHARACTER DEATH THAT AFFECTED YOU THE MOST

Uller is the god of death, winter, archery and hunting.

33385229

There may be others that bothered me more, but I don’t want to post any spoilers for books.  So I’ll go with this one since we all know they both die at the end.

NJORD – FAVOURITE BOOK AN EPIC JOURNEY ON WATER/OCEAN SETTING

Njord is the god of the wind and the sea.

I’m not sure on this one.  If I think of one, I’ll come back and edit it. I can think of some I haven’t read yet, but nothing I’ve read is jumping out at me right now.

VALKYRIE – FAVOURITE STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER

The Valkyries, much like the Amazons, are strong female warriors.

345627

There are so many strong female leads that I love, but I went with Rose Hathaway.

AESIR/VANIR – FAVOURITE BOOK CREW

The Aesir and the Vanir are two groups of Norse gods, believed to be old and new gods.

30183

Might not be my favorite, but I love the group from the House of Night series.

SEIPYRTS – FAVOURITE SIDEKICK (NON-HUMAN CHARACTER)

Seipyrts is Odin’s trusty eight legged steed, yes you heard that correctly – eight legs. I promise that he is the god’s horse companion and not a giant spider that he rides around on…although that would probably strike more fear in the hearts of his enemies than a pretty horse does.

28524058

Not really a sidekick, but I love the dragons in this so far (still reading this one right now).  I really want a pet dragon.

I’m not going to tag anyone, but if you want to do this one, consider yourself tagged. Please make sure you post your link in the comments so I can read your answers, too.
