The Box in the Woods

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.

I really hope Maureen Johnson writes more books with Stevie. I’m not ready to be done with her story.

The Box in the Woods isn’t really a sequel to Truly Devious, but it makes more sense if you’ve read the trilogy first. There could be spoilers from those books below.

Stevie is back home after solving the mystery at school. She got a lot of attention and press for awhile, but it died down. But one day, she received a message from a rich guy who bought an old camp. The camp had a new name now, but it was the scene of the box in the woods murders in the late 70’s. The book goes back and forth in time like it did in Truly Devious. And I actually liked this murder story more. Stevie convinces Nate and Janelle to be camp counselors with her so she could maybe try to solve this mystery. David was still on the road, but we do get a little bit of him in this book. Vi was away for the summer, so they weren’t in the book except for mentions. Stevie wasn’t used to having to deal with living family members of victims and that made this murder a lot harder. She had to see that people were still hurting all these years later. But Stevie is always determined once she focuses on a murder and she thought she could do something to help.

I don’t want to put anything else about the story to ruin it. I did figure out the murderer (or is it murderers), but I had the wrong motive. I love how everything came together in the end.

I gave this book 5 stars.

Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for my review copy.

I'm Kristi. I'm a wife, mom, and grandma. I have been breeding leopard geckos for ten years. I love to read and have been trying to review more books (the reason for this blog besides wanting to talk about books with everyone). I also love music and going to concerts, mostly punk and pop punk.

  1. Great review! I feel like a dumba** because I received a finished copy unexpectedly in the mail from the publisher and thought I needed to read book 3 first (which I’ve been putting off for a year). I can’t wait to read this one now
