Down with This Ship by Katie Kingman
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Publishing Date: June 8, 2021
Content warning: Light bullying
Kole Miller does one thing really well: write fanfiction for the show The Space Game. Everything else is a struggle: like managing her anxiety, frequent crushes, and plans after high school. But when her blog, Spacer, wins a major fanfiction contest, her traffic soars.
With massive readership comes criticism Kole isn’t prepared for, including getting stuck in the heated ship wars surrounding the show. And then an invitation to speak at The Space Game’s official convention arrives in her inbox.
When the most competitive kids in her Creative Writing class discover Kole’s writing Spacer, her blog is taken hostage and she risks them hitting ctrl+A+del on Spacer. To win it back, Kole must face both her inner demons and the ones at Crystal Lake High before they make the drama not just about The Space Game, but about Kole herself.
Including snippets from Kole’s fanfic, emails, and text messages, Down With This Ship is sure to bring out the inner fangirl in anyone.

This was a cute book that made me laugh out loud more than once. I really loved Kole, but sometimes I wanted to smack her, too.
Kole writes a popular fanfic blog that she keeps secret from almost everyone. She calls herself a geek and she definitely is. During her junior year, a new boy moves in by her. He reminds her of her tv show crush. Noah starts playing basketball with Kole’s brother, Will, and she starts spending some time with him. There’s also a boy, Colin, that has been a pain since freshmen year. But he’s being nice to her suddenly and compliments her writing in class. They start talking a bit, but she still likes Noah a lot. When a bully/creep finds out that she’s the fanfic writer, he blackmails her. One of those things includes going to a dance with him. Kole is also dealing with a mom who doesn’t really support her hobby and she was invited to speak in front of people at a con. Kole is keeping secrets and trying to deal with everything on her own. The blackmail isn’t just from the one boy, but also an ex friend. Everything is a mess.
The things that stood out to me most in this book were Kole’s sense of humor and her relationships. Will and Kole’s sibling relationship was fun to read. I adored her best friend. And I really liked Colin after some time.
I gave this book 4 stars.
Warnings for bullying, blood, hitting, creepy stalker type dating, unsupportive parents that border on a bit of emotional abuse at times.
Katie Kingman has wanted to be a writer since freshman year when her English teacher read her story out loud. The experience was mortifying, but it led to a lifelong love of classic literature and writing fiction. She now lives, teaches, and geeks in Phoenix, Arizona, with her husband, two kids, and five cats. When not writing, she can be found gardening and scrolling Netflix for a new OTP.
