Pride and Premeditation (Jane Austen Murder Mystery #1) by Tirzah Price
Genre: Young Adult Historical Fiction Mystery
Publishing Date: April 6, 2021
Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries series is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.
When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.
I admit that I’m not a huge Pride and Prejudice fan, but I had to get this one when I saw it was a mystery. I loved this!
Lizzie works unofficially for her father, a barrister. Lizzie wants to work in court, but women don’t have those jobs. Since there are 5 daughters, Lizzie’s dad is leaving his business to a man that works there. Lizzie’s mom hopes she will marry the man, but Lizzie can’t stand him. She’s smart and a bit outspoken for the time period. She’s not looking for a husband. When there is a murder, Lizzie tries to get involved to prove herself to her father. While speaking with the accused, Lizzie meets Mr. Darcy. Darcy was hired by Mr. Bingley because they are old friends. Lizzie doesn’t want to give up and starts investigating. She has five days to figure out who the murderer was, get evidence, and figure out why. She ends up spending more time with Mr. Darcy and grows to respect him over time. Meanwhile, her mom is still pressuring her to get married and she isn’t being treated the same as a young woman investigating a murder.
I loved the mystery in this book. The relationship between Lizzie and Jane really stood out to me. Mr. Darcy annoyed me a lot at first, but I grew to like him over time. I’m so happy that this is a series and can’t wait for the next book.
I gave this book 5 stars. Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for my review copy.
