Rose Szabo’s thrilling debut What Big Teeth is a dark, gothic fantasy YA novel about a teen girl who returns home to her strange, wild family after years of estrangement, perfect for fans of Wilder Girls.
Eleanor Zarrin has been estranged from her wild family for years. When she flees boarding school after a horrifying incident, she goes to the only place she thinks is safe: the home she left behind. But when she gets there, she struggles to fit in with her monstrous relatives, who prowl the woods around the family estate and read fortunes in the guts of birds.
Eleanor finds herself desperately trying to hold the family together. In order to save them all Eleanor must learn to embrace her family of monsters and tame the darkness inside her.
Exquisitely terrifying, beautiful, and strange, this fierce paranormal fantasy will sink its teeth into you and never let go.
This was a seriously weird book.
I admit that I struggled a bit at times in this one. It’s not quite what I expected, but I thought it was really good. It will be a bit hard to review without giving away the story, but I’ll do my best.
Eleanor had been sent away to school and hadn’t seen her family in years. She did something bad and had to go back home. She remembers some things from her childhood, but not a lot. Her family never replied to her letters and she felt that they didn’t love her. Things are very weird with her family. Her grandfather came over to the US and started his family there. He’s a wolf and most comfortable in that form. Also pretty feral, too. Her grandmother is essentially a witch. Rhys, her cousin, and Luma, her sister are both there. Her aunt is there, but she never speaks. And then there is Arthur. He’s a man that serves the family and everyone seems to be in love with him. Eleanor realizes that he can’t be human and that her grandma controlled him, but she wasn’t sure about him. She remembered him from when she was young and he didn’t age. Both of Eleanor’s parents are there and neither are fully human.
Things in the house are weird. There are times where Eleanor is hiding out in her room. She does want to be a part of the family and be loved. When something bad happens, Eleanor must step up and take care of everyone.
I gave this book 3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4 on Goodreads. Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for my review copy.
Warnings for blood, death, child being sent away, dead animal parts, fire.
