Renegades by Marissa Meyer
Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
I put off reading this series for quite awhile. I had each book ordered when they released. But the size! I knew it would be a commitment to read them in a row. But I’m super glad I started. I had a feeling I would enjoy these. My husband and I are watching The Gifted on Hulu and I think that’s why I picked Renegades when trying to find a book to read. I definitely see the similarities.
I really liked Nova, but I loved Adrian. He’s just so good and kind. Without giving away much of the plot, I have to say that I’m hoping that they end up together. I love enemies to lovers and this one takes it to the extreme. I can understand Nova’s need for revenge. I just want her to see things a bit differently. I do worry about the Renegades not being super great people, too. They have good intentions, but power tends to corrupt. I think we saw a bit of that already in this book. The ending surprised me a bit, too.
I thought the pacing was great. The story had a lot of detail, but wasn’t overly complicated. It was just a fun book to read.
I gave this 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5 on Goodreads.
Warnings for death of parents, death of children, blood, revenge.
