I was thrilled to hear from KayLynn about doing a post for my blog. I’m really excited for Shielded (have it pre-ordered), and I can’t wait to read it!
For fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn comes a thrilling new fantasy about a kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her.
The kingdom of Hálendi is in trouble. It’s losing the war at its borders, and rumors of a new, deadlier threat on the horizon have surfaced. Princess Jennesara knows her skills on the battlefield would make her an asset and wants to help, but her father has other plans.
As the second-born heir to the throne, Jenna lacks the firstborn’s—her brother’s—magical abilities, so the king promises her hand in marriage to the prince of neighboring Turia in exchange for resources Hálendi needs. Jenna must leave behind everything she has ever known if she is to give her people a chance at peace.
Only, on the journey to reach her betrothed and new home, the royal caravan is ambushed, and Jenna realizes the rumors were wrong—the new threat is worse than anyone imagined. Now Jenna must decide if revealing a dangerous secret is worth the cost before it’s too late—for her and for her entire kingdom.
There is a great pre-order special including stickers, postcards, signed book plate, and more. Check out the information and submit the form HERE.
Author Guest Post:
I’ve been working on Shielded for the last five years, tinkering with the words, ripping apart the story and piecing it back together. It went through so many revisions, I started to feel like I was writing fanfiction of my own story. On July 21st, it’ll be available to purchase. Printed. Finished. No more changes.
I’m excited for that day, but also kind of terrified. There will be people who love it and share it with all their friends. There will also be people who don’t like it. And the people-pleaser in me wants to pull all the words back and work on it more. Keep tinkering until I can make sure everyone will love it. Wait to release it until it’s The Perfect Book.
But is there such a thing as a perfect book? For an author to create something that would resonate with every single person? Of course not! We all have our own trauma, our own experiences and heartache and triumphs and joys.
That’s the magic of story. It takes people who are so different, and allows them to see through another lens. Allows readers to connect over their love of (or sometimes hate of) fictional characters in a fictional world. That is the real magic. It’s not about creating the perfect book, it’s about connecting people together when so much in life drives us apart.
Even knowing all of that, it’s hard to let something go that you’ve worked on for years, knowing it’s not perfect. Beyond the fact that it won’t be to everyone’s taste, I’m not a perfect writer. I’ll improve in craft and gain more life experience, but that book will always be there, a testament to where I started. It’s hard to see my own imperfections in such a permanent form, to let others see those imperfections. Makes me squirm and want to hide.
But Shielded will be out on July 21st, whether I’m ready or not. I have to learn to embrace that. I’m human. We all are. I’m imperfect. And that’s okay. It’s okay to fail, and to share our failures with others. It’s okay to dream and stretch and improve. It’s our differences that make each of us amazing. It’s in the journey that we grow, not in the accomplishment.
