Review of Find Me Their Bones by Sara Wolf (physical arc)

This is a book two.  There will be spoilers below for book one (but not for book two).

Find Me Their Bones by Sara Wolf

No one can save her.

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him. Now, he hates the sight of her. Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life.

But fate isn’t ready to give her up just yet.

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a second chance at life as a Heartless. But it comes with a terrible price. As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity.

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard. Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder.

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done.

There are spoilers for book one (Bring Me Their Hearts) below.  Please don’t read the review if you haven’t read book one.

You’ve probably noticed that I recently read Bring Me Their Hearts.  I waited.  Why?  Because I knew there was a cliffhanger ending.  Find Me Their Bones is finally here, so I read them back to back.  What did I get?  A great book with another cliffhanger ending!  Ugh!  I seriously want book three right now.

At the end of Bring Me Their Hearts, we find out that Varia is alive and she’s a witch.  Zera has been outed to Lucien, Fione, and Malachite as a Heartless.  Zera’s monster is back in full force, telling her how no one could like her now.  They know what she is.  And in one way, the monster is sort of correct.  Lucien feels betrayed.  Malachite is pissed because Luc is hurt.  And Fione is afraid.  Heartless terrify her and she can’t stand to be around Zera.  Lady Y’shennria is gone without a trace.  The King is told what Zera is, but not that she killed Gavik.  He is so happy about Varia being alive that he’ll do pretty much anything for her.  Varia asks for Zera to stay and he allows it with some conditions.  No one else is to know she’s a Heartless and she is not going to be with Lucien.

Varia is a stronger witch than expected and she took Zera as her Heartless.  She now controls Zera and her heart.  She also turned Gavik into a Heartless.  Both are servants to Varia in some way.  Gavik is sent to hand out bread every day.  Zera is taken to work with a celeon, Yorl who is obsessed with finishing and proving his grandfather’s work.  Varia wants to find the bone tree.  This source of power has been calling to her since she was a child.  She wants to control the valkerax to stop a war.  She will be the most powerful person alive.  Valkerax have had their minds mixed up so much by the bone tree that they can’t be talked to or reasoned with.  They kill anyone that gets near them.  Yorl has made a serum for Zera so that she can understand what the valkerax says.  She is the only one that can do it because it kills anyone who takes it shortly after.  Zera must die over and over again to get the information Varia wants to get her heart back.  Zera is to teach the valkarax to weep.  Once the monster has no control, the valkarax can tell her where the bone tree is.  They always know.  Zera is forced to keep this from everyone else.

Lucien doesn’t stay away from Zera for long and she can’t understand why.  There’s no way he could have loved her.  Especially now.  She battles within herself over her feelings for him.  She knows there is something there.  She loves him.  She had friends, too.  A place to belong.  But she has no heart and they saw her transform and kill.  Zera pushed Lucien away over and over, even trying to set him up with a nice girl.  Their relationship and Zera’s feelings made me so sad.  They need to be together.

Strange things start happening and the war is starting.  Zera is afraid for Varia to have that power, but she needs her heart and will do almost anything to get it back.

I gave this book 5 stars.  Thank you to Entangled Teen for sending me a copy for review.
