Playlist for When Summer Ends by Jessica Pennington

I’m part of the street team for When Summer Ends and we were asked to make a small playlist for the book.  I thought I would share mine here with videos.

Aiden Emerson is an all-star pitcher and the all-around golden boy of Riverton. Or at least he was, before he quit the team the last day of junior year without any explanation. How could he tell people he’s losing his vision at seventeen?

Straight-laced Olivia thought she had life all figured out. But when her dream internship falls apart, her estranged mother comes back into her life, and her long-time boyfriend ghosts her right before summer break, she’s starting to think fate has a weird sense of humor.

Each struggling to find a new direction, Aiden and Olivia decide to live summer by chance. Every fleeting adventure and stolen kiss is as fragile as a coin flip in this heartfelt journey to love and self-discovery from the author of Love Songs & Other Lies.

Without giving too much away, I want to explain why I picked the songs I did.  I will have a little about it with each video.  Most of these videos are live ones (they’re mine), but not all.

Long Night by With Confidence.   I thought this was a good, sad breakup type of song.

“Won’t you turn around and please look at me
For everything we are, everything we’ve been?
I promise I’ll be good if you stay with me

But everything we are it just went away
With a slight of a tongue and a sour taste
I cannot recall I can’t explain”

Summer Stained by Broadside.  This one is just kind of about being broken.  Not just by a break up, but with emotions and life.

“So validate me or I’ll give in
I’m on the edge and I’m losing grip
Can you save my life
Woah oh oh woah oh oh
So validate me or I’ll give in
I’m on the edge and I’m losing grip
Show me how to love and not fall apart”

See You Around by Sleep On It.  This one stood out to me because of the distance after the break up.  Letting go can be hard.

“The silence is gone now
There’s a buzz in my head
From all the things that you said
I’ll be seeing you around
I don’t want you to go
But I need you to know that

Life forgives if you play in time
But not for you if you think you’re mine
So play the game and we’ll take it slow
I need you to go, so please let me go”

Neck Deep  A Part of Me.  This one had a couple reasons why I chose it.  It could be Aiden’s new feelings for Olivia and debating if he should feel them.  It could be her ex thinking about her.

“I like her ’cause she’s smart, headstrong and independent
She puts me in my place, but I don’t know where I stand
And if only I could find the words, or muster up the nerve to tell her
I’ll never forget her
And she’ll always have a part of me”

Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional.  This one is just a great love song that talks about a great day spent together.  It made me think of the amazing days that Aiden and Olivia spent together.

“My hopes are so high,
that your kiss might kill me.
So won’t you kill me,
so I die happy.
My heart is yours to fill or burst,
to break or bury,
or wear as jewelery,
which ever you prefer.”

If I’m Lucky by State Champs.  This one really has multiple things from the entire book.  Summer, growing up, falling for a girl, etc.

“Hello Summer, or should I say goodbye?
Well it’s been so long but I’m still thinking
If it’s worth another try.”

“I’m just trying to find my place in this world
And I know it’s not so right to feel this way about a girl,
But if you stay or if you go, I’m right there with you.
But you know that I’m looking for more than a pretty smile,
And if I’m lucky you can stay for a while,
But if you stay or if you go, I’m hanging on,
I’m just, I’m just hanging on
I’m just hanging on”

I’m pretty sure my playlist will be pretty unique, but I wanted to stick to the music I love.  I went with slower songs from pop punk/emo bands.  I hope that you might find a new favorite here, too.

What type of music do you listen to?  Did any of these songs stand out to you?

I'm Kristi. I'm a wife, mom, and grandma. I have been breeding leopard geckos for ten years. I love to read and have been trying to review more books (the reason for this blog besides wanting to talk about books with everyone). I also love music and going to concerts, mostly punk and pop punk.
