Kiss of the Royal
by Lindsey Duga
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: July 3rd 2018
In the war against the Forces of Darkness, the Royals are losing. Princess Ivy is determined to end this centuries-long conflict once and for all, so her new battle partner must succeed where the others failed. Prince Zach’s unparalleled skill with a sword, enhanced by Ivy’s magic Kiss, should make them an unstoppable pair—but try convincing Zach of that.
Prince Zach has spent his life preparing for battle, but he would rather be branded a heretic than use his lips as nothing more than a way to transfer magic. A kiss is a symbol of love, and love is the most powerful weapon they have—but try convincing Ivy of that.
With the fate of their world on the line, the battlefield has become a testing ground, and only one of them can be right. Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan—but try convincing their hearts of that.

Kiss of the Royal was a little slow to get into, but the pacing picked up and I ended up really liking it a lot.
Royals believe that their kiss with magic can be used to defeat evil creatures like goblins, trolls, griffins, etc. The men and women get partnered and they use the kiss to destroy everything and keep the people safe. They believe in the history of the Royals and are very strict with it. There is no love for Royals. They believe in a bond and in lust, but never love. Kisses unlock the magic that is in every Royal. Direct descendants of Myriana are thought to have the strongest magic.
The Romanticas don’t believe in the Royal history. They have a different story and they believe in love. So much that it almost dictates what they will or won’t do. Almost everything is done out of love.
Ivy has had multiple partners and she has lost each one. She is the strongest princess and a good fighter. There are signs that something bad is coming, so the Royals look outside for help. Ivy is to be paired up with Zach, but he is half Royal, half Romantica. This gives everyone pause, but it quickly becomes obvious that he’s a great fighter. They must head out, along with Ivy’s page Brom, to find a dragon’s egg. If the egg hatches, the dragon will destroy everything. There have also been sightings of the Evil Queen. This could be the end of the world as they know it, with only the dark creatures and Queen remaining.
Ivy finds out quickly that Zach will not kiss her. He refuses to use her magic, but doesn’t tell her why. She does find out that he believes in love and he is quickly falling for her. Ivy has strange feelings for Zach, but she doesn’t believe that love is real.
While on this quest, Ivy finds out things that make her question the Royals history and everything she has always believed. She is torn on what she is seeing with her own eyes vs the history of her people. Can love actually be real? And is love what it takes to defeat the Evil Queen?
There are a lot of battles with creatures which kept the pacing good for the second half of the book. I really loved Zach and Brom. Ivy took a little bit to like, but I did like her a lot by the end.
Warnings for mentions of miscarriages and some abuse from Ivy’s mom.
I gave this book 4 stars. Thank you netgalley and Entangled Teen for the chance to read this early.
About the Author:
Lindsey Duga developed a deep love for courageous heroes, dastardly villains, and enchanting worlds from the cartoon shows, books, and graphic novels she read as a kid. Drawing inspiration from these fantastical works of fiction, she wrote her first novel in college while she was getting her bachelor’s in Mass Communication from Louisiana State University. By day, Lindsey is an account manager at a digital marketing agency based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. By night, and the wee hours of the morning, she writes both middle grade and young adult. She has a weakness for magic, anything classical, all kinds of mythology, and falls in love with tragic heroes. Other than writing and cuddling with her morkie puppy, Delphi, Lindsey loves catching up on the latest superhero TV show, practicing yoga, and listening (and belting) to her favorite music artists and show tunes. KISS OF THE ROYAL is her YA debut novel.
