“A pair of yellow eyes caught the moonlight and locked onto hers.”
Mercy has always dreamed of becoming a werewolf trapper like her father. In Kanta, one must learn how to survive one way or another. A dark-skinned, blue-eyed young beauty, Mercy understands that she brings out the beast in monsters and men. When a routine werewolf delivery turns into a vicious assault from a pair of human traffickers, Mercy’s life changes forever. Somehow she must endure in a dangerous city where women and werewolves are hunted.
This is Mercy’s first peek inside the Farrell Mill, where werewolves are sold for profit. The place is quite gruesome as she soon finds out.
Mercy had never seen a place as intimidating as the Farrell Mill. The entire floor was solid metal as were the windowless walls. She could hear the perpetual turning of the gears that ran the mill, its workers grinding down the wheat until it was as tiny as a grain of sand. At the far end of the room was a simple wooden table with an empty chair on either side. It looked out of place here, as though it was trying to distract her from realizing she had been swallowed whole by a giant mechanical monster. The smell of death permeated the air, as if the walls had been built with corpses instead of metal. In a corner of the room was a large puddle of blood, presumably werewolf.
The she-wolf in the cage was no longer cowering. She stood, her ears perked forward, and she began pacing back and forth. She looked to Mercy, to the rod in her hands, and gave a meek whimper. She knew what this place was. The beasts weren’t stupid like so many trappers liked to claim. There was real fear in her eyes as Father pulled the cage to the table.
“This place feels … odd.” Mercy shuddered. Odd didn’t really describe it, but she couldn’t put a word to the dread that seeped through her skin. It was a place that knew death well, and she steeled herself for whatever came next. Whatever happened to the she-wolf, she couldn’t show fear. Father might never bring her back if she did.
“It always smells like this. Can’t let it get to you. It’s just a place like any other.”
The room echoed every tiny noise, every shuffled foot, and Mercy felt like she was on display somehow. As though every action she took here was being watched, calibrated, and recorded. There was no way she could voice that to her father. He lived by his senses, not so much his instincts. She wasn’t sure if he would believe her or even understand.
I write about strange creatures. Typically they shouldn’t exist, or they have bled through from a different reality, or they’re pretending to be a crying baby in a crib. Sometimes that lands my stories in horror and other times in fantasy, but there’s always an air of strangeness to my tales. If you want to get a better feel for what I’m talking about, check out a few clips or read a few drabbles.
My work has appeared in a spattering of short story collections, but I do have a few novellas and novels in the pipeline. Other than talking about writing, I also talk about cryptozoology, werewolves, wildlife conservation, and of course kitties. I’ve also been known to nerd out about Batman and The Hobbit, and have recently discovered the cracktastic fun of Black Butler cosplay, so there will likely be more of these incidents.
By day I work as a web developer, so I’ll occasionally talk about web issues like finding the right theme.
