Cover Love (Why you love the cover)

Uncovering the Cover LUV

by S.A. Larsen

The topic of cover art can bear witness to a plethora of perspectives. Some people prefer character images or figures to grace the outer dressing of a novel, while others are distinctly attracted to symbols and the intrigue those can bring. One thing is for sure, opinions will run ramped on what catches the eye more and for what reasons. Toss in the notion of fonts, and you’ll be chatting all day long.

I am such a font lover. What about you?

When asked how I feel about Marked Beauty’s cover, one detail I like to point out is the font choice. It’s romantic with a bit of whimsy, yet there’s sternness that comes from the steel-like edges at some points in the letters. And once you read the story you’ll understand how significant those details are.

Crafty hints of a theme, an event, or a person in the story are elements that have always attracted me to a book’s cover. Those leave an edge of mystery for potential readers to stop and ponder, hopefully intriguing them enough to flip to the back cover blurb and even nibble off a few pages. I can remember talking over my thoughts and feelings with my publisher about a cover image and what we wanted to communicate. They were very receptive to my ideas, the way I saw the story and how I felt the first impression should be made.

Marked Beauty definitely has a symbolic cover. Without giving too much of the story away, there’s meaning behind the cracking glass globe and the blossoming butterfly within. Even though the butterfly is trapped inside, the environment is what it knows. It finds safety within its confinement. But unfortunately, it also wades in the muck of loneliness. The insect struggles and scraps at its see-through walls, but never enough to shatter them because it holds back. This captures my male and female lead’s internal struggles perfectly. Both wade in their past pains and are desperate to break free, yet fear the risk is too great. The darker blues and violet shades, along with the architecture of the building and columns of the backdrop give a romantic, gothic feel that captures the shaded attraction between the love interests. I love that.

I'm Kristi. I'm a wife, mom, and grandma. I have been breeding leopard geckos for ten years. I love to read and have been trying to review more books (the reason for this blog besides wanting to talk about books with everyone). I also love music and going to concerts, mostly punk and pop punk.
